‘Ja, deze kunnen er nog wel bij in de bakken bij de voortuin.’
Mijn vrouw zet een paar geraniums in de winkelwagen. Eigenlijk zijn we naar het tuincentrum gekomen voor wat vaste planten, maar ze kan het niet laten. Het zomergoed ziet er ook zo aanlokkelijk vrolijk uit.
‘Ik neem ook wat heide mee, dat vind ik er bij de buren altijd zo leuk uit zien in de winter.’
Ze zet een aantal plantjes in de wagen.
‘Erica,’ mompel ik.
‘Erica? Nee, bij Madeleine!’ Ze kijkt me verbaasd aan. ‘Over wie heb jij het nu weer? Wie is Erica?’
Ik moet inwendig grinniken. ‘Erica is de Latijnse naam voor heide,’ verduidelijk ik.
Mijn vrouw zucht en loopt verder. Links en rechts worden er wat planten uit de bakken gehaald. Er wordt af en toe naar mijn mening gevraagd en vervolgens komen ze in het wagentje terecht. Of niet. Of toch wel.
‘We kunnen ook wel wat nieuwe planten in de vijver gebruiken,’ oppert mijn vrouw, ‘ik vond die gele lis wel mooi, die deed het fantastisch. Daar heb je toch ook blauwe van? Wie heeft die ook alweer in zijn vijver.’
Ik knik. ‘Iris.’
‘Hè? Iris heeft een balkon, waar heb je het over?’
Ik moet lachen: ‘Sorry, Iris is de Latijnse naam voor lissen.’
Sinds een tijdje ben ik gek op plantjes, met name wilde, en probeer ze steeds bij naam te noemen. En als het lukt ook nog bij hun wetenschappelijke naam. En in het tuincentrum is dat niet zo moeilijk. Veel planten kennen we alleen maar bij hun ‘deftige’ naam: geranium, dahlia, salvia, begonia…
Terwijl ik de plantjes op de lopende band bij de kassa zet, rommelt mijn vrouw wat in haar tas. Ik kijk naar de aanwinsten en zie de rekening al voor me. Dat tikt lekker aan, maar dan heb je ook wat.
‘Pak jij even de pecunia?’ zegt mijn vrouw. Ik kijk naar de winkelwagen, maar die is leeg. Ik draai me vragend naar om en schud niet begrijpend mijn hoofd. ‘Pecunia?’
‘Dat is latijn voor centjes,’ zegt ze met een vilein lachje, ‘ik ben mijn portemonnee vergeten. Jij mag betalen, lief hè?’
